Six receive travel fellow awards to visit Austin, Texas

Six science writers have been awarded CASW Travel Fellowships to cover the cost of attending the 2009 New Horizons in Science briefing for journalists, to be hosted by the University of Texas at Austin, October 18-20. The fellowships are intended primarily for reporters from smaller metropolitan print and broadcast news outlets, freelancers and webcasters with a demonstrated interest in science writing. They offer a unique introduction to science reporting that will prove of long-term benefit to the individual and the profession.

The six science writers are:

  • Katherine Gammon, freelance science writer, Santa Monica, CA; writes for Wired, Popular Science and Nature News
  • Lisa Grossman, freelance writer, Metuchen. NJ; has been an intern at Wired, New Scientist and Now at Science News
  • Adam Hinterthuer, freelance writer, Madison, WI, writes for ScienceNow, Scientific American and wired.com
  • Roberta Kwok, freelance writer, Foster City, CA, writes for Nature, Conservation, Salon.com, California and Science News for Kids
  • Jessica Robinson, Ashland, OR, News Director, Jefferson Public Radio in Ashland, OR
  • Eleanor Spicer, freelance writer, writes for CoastWatch, NCSU newspaper Technician and Southern Living magazine
