CASW supports and honors science journalism with several fellowships and awards.

Annual Application Deadline: June 30
The award is intended to encourage young science journalists by recognizing outstanding reporting and writing in any field of science. The winner receives $1,000 and travel expenses to attend the joint awards ceremony of CASW and the National Association of Science Writers.
Annual Nomination Deadline: June 30
The recipient of this career prize receives a cash award of $5,000, a certificate, and travel expenses to attend the joint awards ceremony of CASW and the National Association of Science Writers.
Annual Application Deadline: April 30
The Sharon Begley Award will comprise both a career prize, recognizing the accomplishments of a mid-career science journalist, and a grant of at least $20,000 to enable the winner to undertake a significant reporting project. The first winner was recognized at ScienceWriters2022.
2025 Application Deadline to be Announced
This early-career training program—a partnership of CASW, the Association of Health Care Journalists, and the Society of Environmental Journalists—provides holistic professional development opportunities for journalists specializing in science, health, and environment reporting.
2025 Application Window for ScienceWriters2025 grants to be Announced
The Council for the Advancement of Science Writing offers travel fellowships to offset the cost of attending meetings and conferences.
Annual Application Deadline: Mid-March
CASW awards fellowships to students enrolled in U.S. graduate-level science writing programs to help defray the cost of tuition. Awards of $6,000 are available to fellows selected on the basis of a national competition. An enhanced fellowship is available for covering the physical sciences.
For current or recent Taylor/Blakeslee Graduate Fellows
Project fellowships offer a small grant for an independent reporting project and come with the support of a senior journalist as a mentor.
